springfield 1903 sniper rifle

i was told by an older gunsmith who looked it up once that i have a springfield 1903 sniper rifle with scope (match set). the scope will slide off in its own bracket and can be put back on and is accurate. a 2x post scope made by belding and mull in Philipsburg, Pa.the stock is not original unfortunately. everything else appears to be original and works. it is a 30-06 caliber. where can i find information about this rifle and possiby its value.

    It would be best if you could post quality close-up photos of rifle and scope.

    As far as the information you have provided it doesn't appear that the scope is original military issue. My reference shows that the scopes used on the 03 snipers are Warner & Swasey, Weaver, & Unertial, ( don't think I spelled the last one right).

    Belding and Mull were in Business from from around 1925 to 1940, which means they missed WWI and WWII. These scopes were never used on '03 sniper rifles. You probably have the B&M Hunter Model 2X scope.
    These scopes were deigned around the B&M proprietary scope mounts which allowed for easy on and off mounting but would not work with any other mount. These old B&M scopes with the B&M mounts have modest collector value.

    Photos would be nice, (as well as a serial number) but in all probability this is just another '03 released by the Army, sold through the NRA and modified by it's owner.

    oh i can not find a serial number on the scope, just the rifle. #107927.

    Yep, Rufe, you spelled it wrong. It is Unertl.

    Low number receiver. There is a known defect in the heat treating process for these receivers and most people feel that they are not safe to fire, at last not with full power loads, due to the dangr of their failing (shattering). This has to be a rifle released for sale to the NRA and then spoterized.

    But, there will always be folks who don't know that rifles in that serial number range shouldn't be fired. So, it might bring as much as $200-300 at auction.
