7mm-08 load
I recently purchased a Remington Model Seven in 7mm-08.My wife will be using it on a mule deer hunt in Craig Colorado this October.Can someone recommend a good load for this caliber.I will be loading 140 grain Sierra bullets unless you advise otherwise.Thanks

Start with edit 38 gr. of Varget and work up. Expect the better loads to be around 45.5-4641-41.8. That's for a 140 and standard primer. I used Win LR primers. Now I use CCI's
Personally, I think H4350x is going to be a great powder for that case as well. Start at 45 and you could work up as high as 49 gr. depending on your cases and how they look for pressure signs.0 -
I would go with a Barnes 120 grain TSX if the rifle likes them first, then a 140 grain Nosler Accubond...better performance ballistically and on game.
The TSX can be driven up to 3100 FPS, and the Nosler Accubond can hit 2800 FPS.

For the 140 grain bullets Hodgdons load center website lists 42.2 grains as Maximum for their Varget powder. Not sure if it is a misprint, but be aware of this.

I have worked up two loads for my 7mm-08. First is 39.0 grains of IMR 4320 powder, 140 grain Remington PSPCL bullet, magnum large rifle primer. Prints a five shot group inside an inch at 100 yards. Second is my best: 39.5 grains of IMR 4320 powder, 150 grain Nosler Partition bullet, magnum large rifle primer prints under 1/2 inch at 100 yards. Approx 2600 fps. I use Sierra Match King 150 grain bullet with the same ingredients for long range silhouettes. My rifle is one I had made up with a Charles Daly mauser action, Bennett barrel from Midway, and a stock purchase here on Gunbroker made by I don't remember who, I know it is British. 0 -

What manual are you looking at? my hornady manual starts out at 33.5 grains of varget with a maximum of 41.50 -

I apologize. It was late and I was mentally mixing loads...a very dangerous combination. Again, sorry. Glad you double checked because yes, that is the max on Varget is 42.2 gr. from the on-line Hodgdon manual. I think I had Reloader 17 on the brain.
From the on-line Nosler manual 42-43 of Varget is projected max. based off burning speed of that and IMR4895 (Varget is just a smidge slower) 41-41.5 is probably where you'll hit the best load and starting around 38-39 gr. is reasonable.
In truth, and I don't mean to poo-poo any information I find here on the reloading forum, I take loads found here as a suggestion and then confirm if it's a viable starting load. Which you did. I don't start loading what I've found until I find some hard information. Which sometimes still isn't enough. I've blown primers with "starting loads". Some were from reloading books. That's not something I want anyone else to experience. Check everywhere you can before dumping that powder. I'm glad you caught that.0 -

My first deer rifle was a Model Seven in 7mm08, I've added many more guns to the safe, but 25 years later I still love that rifle. My favorite load is 46gr of 4350 topped off with 140gr Noslers. Accuracy is outstanding with this combination. Good luck to your wife on the Mule deer hunt.0 -
