Winchester 42 Catalogue Items.
I am looking at a boxed 42 139,xxx (1955)dbl diamond, stamped "deluxe" Gun looks right but the label on end of box (yellow and Black) has the catalog # listed in bold numbers on the upper right as 4289. I see G4286SV,G4288SV etc. in Schwing's book but no reference to a 4289. Can you help me with this.
Also the diameter of the wood at the muzzle end of the forearm, is larger than the metal cap by a sixteenth to an eighth of an inch...in otherwords not a smooth transition between wood and metal. I think this is odd on a "deluxe" gun. I have a few authentic skeet guns and the transition of wood to metal cap is much tighter...nearly seamless.

This is gonna be tough to answer without seeing it. does the date on the box match the gun( look on bottom of box)? If the box post dates the gun then there is strike one! A deluxe 42 would be a good candidate for forgery because of there worth. Compare it to this one, and if it looks to good to be true, well...........I did notice how "proud" the wood is on the one below, I have not seen enough deluxe 42's to judge if they made them more "proud". To me the one below does'nt look right, the wood is too shiney??? But someone paid $5800 for it.
