Win Model 70 Carbine
Can anyone tell me if this is anything special and what it out to sell for? Says SPAG G17219337. Nice wood. Hooded front sight, adj rear. Drilled and tapped.

In the serial number range that the original poster gave, it is not a pre-war, or even a Pre-64 model 70. It is fairly common, and the Blue Book does not know DICK about Winchesters...

One more thing to take notes on...If it were a PRE-WAR CARBINE, chances are it would have not been drilled and tapped at the factory.Best0 -
I own such a rifle, 270 Win. It is nothing special but it is a good shooter. If you already have it, keep it. You won't get much by selling it. 0 -
Thanks guys. This belongs to a friend who wants to trade it for an AK47. I told him he's crazy, but it looks like it isn't worth all that much, and AK's have gone up a lot in price since I checked last. So maybe it's a fair deal. I still think he's crazy because I would take that 70 over an AK any day. 0 -

Sorry, but it is you that has his facts wrong. The rifle in question is most definitely NOT a pre-64, it is not even a real WINCHESTER, and it very definitely is NOT worth "big money"... trust me on this.
What you seem to be missing is the "G" prefix on the serial number. Winchester did not begin using the "G" prefix until 1968. In order for a Winchester Model 70 to be a pre-64, the serial number must be 571471 or less.
As a side note (and this has been stated many times in the past on this forum), the Blue Book is a very poor reference document as it pertains to Winchester serialization, and its descriptions of many of the various models. It is marginal at best as a valid price guide.0 -
There seems to be two opposing camps here. My friend seems to think it is not old, as in not older than 1970's or 80's. From the serial number chart that Fish provided, it could be mid 80's. I'm inclined to believe that's the case. I think Bert just set the record straight. Thanks to all. So is this gun worth $5-600 like the similar guns seem to be going for here on GB? Or is there a significant drop due to USRAC manufacture? 0 -
All winchester named products whether Actually made by Winchester or the later U.S. Repeating Arms Corp. are experiencing a price inflaction due to the name being all but gone. In time the U.S. Repeating Arms rifles will be seen as lesser and the prices will find a natural, and lower, level. Currently $500-$600 is probably about right. 0 -
