mauser .22 insert

Hi, i just bought am k98 and with it i got a wooden box containing a insert that fires 22lr. There are some makings on the outside of the box that read 7/J.T.8.4. 2./A.R.18. NT.2232. with a smal circle below and to the right of the last set. Inside the box there is a signature along with some numbers. the magazines are marked erma erfurt 1937. The insert itself shows heavy signs of use. Would i be better off having fun and using this or is it a collectors item? Also any other info would be great because there is not alot of info on the internet. Thanks alot.

    It's a very collectable kit to have. You can still use it since it's very robust. Lot's of info in books and keep searching the internet, you will find info.
    Or you can just sell it.

    If you were to sell it, I would take my time for sure with it and find a collector who would pay for it. It seemed I saw one of these go a while back for $400? I can't place it. Anyhow, check with collectors. The only close picture I have of one is inserted into a rifle already and you can't really see the device. That is Robert Ball's, Military Mausers of the World pp. 190.

    Personally, I would shoot it. It's a pretty cool device. Handle it with care and it'll be fine.

    Thanks for the replies. If it is that robust i probably will shoot it, however i would still like a figure if anyone has one. Are we talking $500? $5,000?

    In Between your ? estimate according to the last one I saw go on auction.
    Do a smart search for "erma conversion unit".

    Searching erma conversion unit worked great i was able to find alot more info on it. Thanks to everyone for their help.
