I need a Punch set

Does it matter where I buy it?
Are they all the same if not where is the best place to buy a punch set? Is there a place I can walk into and get a quality set (like Sears) or should I order from a place like Brownell's.
Cost is a factor but I don't want to bitch up my stripped receivers.

    The hardware store punches (and sets) that I have seen are not very useful for firearms applications. I suggest that you order a dedicated set of punches from one of the big firearms outfits like Midway or Brownells. If you guns have roll pins (split-pins) you'll need a set of punches for those specific pins or you will either screw up the pin or get the punch stuck inside the pin...which will screw it up.

    Do yourself a favor and get some good ones from Brownells or Midway. They sell complete sets or if you know which specific sizes you need you can order them individually. Brownells even sells some with replaceable tips. Be leery of the cheap ones sold at gunshows most of these are poor quality. Believe me I know from past experiences.

    i have a set by jenkins-custom that is an 8 piece set with T handles.
    comes in a metal stand. I think it was 20 bucks shipped. it has served well for 1911 and AR15 builds. seems to be well made.

    The Brownells punches with removeable tips are good. A great set for about $30 is made by Grace and sold by midway. The Grace set is polished and hardened; nice. S&W sells a set that looks like it came from a flea market. Starret punches are good but prices. Look at the Grace reviews at Midway; $30 well spent.

    Yep, Brownell's or Midway. T-handles sound like ball end hex wrenches to me.

    I second this, and there are many types of punches...roll pins, and taper pins are the most common in the gun industry. If my punches don't say Starrett, they say Craftsman.

    I too have a set similar to the Jenkins T-HANDLE pin punches. You haven't lived till you worked with them. Easy to use, works very well as slave/alignment tools. The set pictured is for both roll and std pins....I had to buy two sets to get that feature. Bob

    I have been using the same Starrett set for almost 30 years of my tinkering. Other than having to replace the 1/16" a couple of times, I am impressed with the quality of their product. I'm not sure what a set runs these days, but I considered it a wise investment. (you get what you pay for). I concur with buying a good set of roll pin punches too, as we see a lot of these more and more in firearms. Snap-on makes a great set and they are guaranteed, unlike the Starrett's. Pay your money and make your choice. You won't find the quality at the discount stores.
