winchester model 270 22

I just came from a gun show and I picked up a first year production gun. It has a plastic forarm and in great original shape. My problem is there is no serial number on the gun anyware? could this gun be a early proto type? has anyone heard of gun in this series with out a number? this number has not been ground off I have really looked the gun over hard. thanks for the help

    First year production was 1963... 5-years before the GCA of 1968, which required all firearms to be serialized. It was standard practice for Winchester to not put serial numbers on the lesser expensive firearms models, most especially, the .22 rim fire rifles.

    Thank for the info, do you see this often? I have seen 100s of 1000s of rifles in my life and not seen this before.

    Yes, I see it quite often on the pre-1968 manufactured guns. To give you a quick example, pick up any Model 1900, 1902/02, 1904/04/04A, 67/67A, 68, or 69/69A... you will not find a serial number on any of them. The same situation applies to the Model 37 shotguns.

    Not to me they aren't[xx(]. I suppose that to some they might be worth $100 - $150.
