Movie prop SAA with web replacing ejector housing
Does anyone know the origin of the cast aluminum web that was installed on Colt Single Action revolvers replacing the ejector housing to make the revolver appear to be a Civil War era weapon? I believe that they were supplied on
prop pistols rented to movie studios from Ellis Prop & Graphics and Stembridge in the 1950/60's. These revolvers appeared in many Western movies and TV shows including The Horse Soldiers with John Wayne and Alverez Kelly with William Holden. Thanks. Mike

I've seen a lot of them in movies and in a few articles about Stembridge, but I don't know where they came from. Cast up in some contract foundry and screwed on in Stembridge's shop is my guess. 0 -
One of my past careers was as a Prop Artist for theaters on the west coast from 1982 to 1993 with some experience with rented prop guns from Ellis and other shops and I would have to say that the only origin to such modifications was a design order sent to the shop metalsmith for such a item to be made and the reason for the modification was to have a reliable blank firing cartridge revolver instead of trying to modify a original cap and ball revolver as reproductions weren't that readily available at least not in the earlier days. One of the most unusual mods I saw was a pair of S&W large frame double actions with SAA grip frames and ejector housings so they would look like Colts and the actor could fake fanning the hammer while actually shooting double action. hope this sheds some light on the subject 0 -
