Winchester 21 Custom engraved.....

I am assuming this is factory engraving since on the custom years 21's it was standard. Is there anyway to tell who did the engraving on this 21? Pauline, did the engravers ever put there initials or any personal markings on there engraved guns?? Thanks

    My bet is that it was engraved by one of the Kusmit's, but Pauline will have the answer for sure.

    I do not believe that the in-house engravers were allowed to put their intials or personal markings on the guns. Again, Pauline will have the definitive answer.

    From day one, all the way back to the Ulrichs, it was company policy that no engraver sign a gun unless asked by the customer to do so. Very few engraved guns that were done in the factory were signed. As far as any way to I.D. work, unless you engraved at Winchester it would take alot of time and study of authentic Winchester engraved firearms. All of the engravers had to be able to duplicate previous engravers styles. If an earlier engraved gun was sent in for refinish, due to rust or other metal issues, when polished the engraving could be lightened in areas or lost in some spots entirely. Who ever was working at that time had to be able to reproduce the original work exactly before the gun was reblued and returned to the customer. That is how any of us know Winchester engraving inside and out.
    The Model 21 you are refering to is incidentally one of the few legit guns I've seen for a while. I checked my Model 21 records and it is in there. I also checked Jasper Salerno's personal engraving records and found the following: Jasper started work on this gun on June 21, 1971. It was commissioned through the Ft. Buckner Gun club and sent to Winchester Asia Inc. for John Wheat. All the specs listed are accurate according to Jasper's books and other 21 records I have. Considering the percentage of Model 21s that I have seen misrepresented the last few years this gun would be an excellent investment for someone. Hope this answers your questions.

    Wow this has to be the greatest forum any where on the internet . to attract people like Bert and now P.MUERRIE to give us information on a question straight from the Horses Mouth . I wish Charles Clawson would come aboard to answer some of our questions on Colts . Might make me start collecting Winchesters as well as my small collection of Colts and High Standards. . Sorry I did not intend to forget about the great colt folks and high standard folks as well as many others that really help with their info.

    He Dogs house is getting an additon put on, getting a roof Monday, gonna cost like a college education. Why don't we let Bert buy it and we can both make payments. I will hunt with in in even numbered years, and you can have the odd. Better still, we could hunt together and alternate on the birds.[^]

As a newcomer to the forum also I'm doing lot of reading..less asking...but your informed response on the engraving family at Winchester gives me great hope as I've grabbed a few that have no names, initials, or history save one Neil Hartlip signed 42...Can you elaborate on him a bit? I am told he was an engraver there? Thanks in advance...lee
