Light pin strikes on auto pistol
Help! I purchased a 9MM pistol (new) in February. It has been back to the factory twice and had the firing pin replaced and a new extractor. It has also been back to the shop and had the firing pin replaced. At the shop it seems to shoot fine with various ammo. When we go to the range I load 5 rounds in the clip. If the first round goes off then it is more likely to shoot through the clip. When a round fails to fire I can get it to go off (sometimes)by pulling the hammer back and firing it. It will fire fine for a few rounds and then it may have light pin strikes on the next 3 or 4 rounds. Last time out I had 8 light strikes out of about 30 rounds. Any ideas?

Anything I bought NEW that I had that much trouble with I would return and get my money back or demand another gun to replace it. If you ever have to defend yourself with that thing it may get you killed !!!! 0 -
Sounds like an ammo problem. Handloads with primers not fully seated? Rifle primers instead of pistol? 0 -
Or, surplus sub machine gun ammo is a possibility. 0 -
Sounds like a Kahr CW9 I had. I suspected Remington UMC primers, or that the chamber was cut a little too deep. 0 -
Are the firing pin hits fairly close to center? 0 -
Check and see if the firing pin hole is oversized. There could be a possibilty that small bits of brass, powder or other types of fouling are making their way around the tip of the firing pin and building up inside. That would cause a drag on the pin and slow it down considerably, causing a light hit. Of course, if it's a French gun, all bets are off. 0 -
Thank you for your replies. We have tried to shoot American Eagle, Federal, Remington, and Sellier & Bellot through it with the same results. The pin strikes are a little off center but not too bad. It is a PT92. Customer service is thinking that we may not be holding the gun firm enough. I have never had this problem with any other automatic pistol. Someone once questioned whether or not the spring was broken and would not line up at times. Gun has less than 300 rounds through it. On the third time to the factory and been serviced at the shop a few times. Thanks again. 0 -
The way you hold a gun has absolutely nothing to do with how a firing pin hits a primer!

Yes. It (the problem) is not user generated. Strength of firing pin strike completely independent. Send it back. Reads like you have a lemon. See if they'll do an exchange vice trying to do what, a third repair? Best, Joe0 -

I have a Ruger P89 that did that. Nearly drove me crazy until a gunsmith pal figured it out. Sometimes the slide was not going into full battery--it stayed back about 1/32"--not enough for me to notice it, but enough for the firing pin to not go all the way forward. Always on the second trigger pull it would fire because the first strike forwarded the slide to full battery. Anyway, he tinkered with it for about 30 minutes and it's worked perfect for the past 3000 rounds.
