k98 expert question

hello, have a k98 mauser byf 44 that has no serial number on the receiver. all numbers match on every other part of the gun, and by every indication, this receiver definataly came with the gun from the factory. this is a absolute vet bring back with a duffle bag cut. receiver just has a perfect eagle with swaztika underneath but no number following as usual. is this normal for late war mausers? have any of you mauser collectors seen this before. any info would be great.

    I've seen it before where the barrel serno was the only number present, but this was on a '45 model. Mauserwerk was still producing good in '44. Have you checked below the woodline for the serno?
    It is possible a rejected for cause receiver in '44, used anyway in '45 was used, but this would mean some acceptance proofs would NOT be present. You need to check for this.

    no number anywhere. its a great condition gun and a great and safe shooter. cant see it being any type of a rejected receiver! thanks

    Sounds interesting.
    Per above, check under the woodline or else clean thoroughly. There HAS to be a s/n somewhere on an unaltered byf 44 receiver. The only genuine/noted cases of unserialed K98k receivers were found on late-war Gustloff's (coded bcd 4, 44, or perhaps 45 - & these are from a completely different armory).

    ok, like i said ,no number. just did a tripple check. bottom of receiver, where it is flat, between what i call the recoil lug and opening where the follower is located is ff. that is all? what you think? thanks

    on the mauser forum, i was told it was totally ligit and commom to see on a byf 44 to see # on barrel only.

    Not on a wartime '44 Oberndorf w/ Nazi firing proof, so gotta suspect that it was scrubbed. Just wonder which forum ya got that info from ..... the argument might actually fly if it's post-war Czech finished/reworked.
