220 long rifle... edit

Hello guys I was wondering if anyone has any info on this cartridge. I seen one today that will be sold at auction tomorrow. It is a single shot built on a Martini action. Pretty cool looking gun but I have no idea what cartridge this is. Thanks for any info....Bull

I will try to get more info today and maybe some pics...Bull

    did you mean to say .22lr? which is a rimfire

    I seem to remember a 220 ARROW this was a wildcat on a single shot rifle Maybe a member that goes by nononsence can shed some light on this question. I will try to research some of my single shot books.

    I'm afraid you'll have to be a little more specific for me to pin down what you're trying to find. I have a minimum of 80 .22 caliber cartridges in my data base...

    .22 Extra Long Rifle:

    "Introduced around 1880, the .22 Extra Long was used in Remington, Ballard, Wesson, Stevens, and later (1916) models of Winchester's M1903 and M1904 single shot bolt action rifles, as well as in Smith & Wesson revolvers."

    Let me know if you get some definitive information and I'll help as much as possible.

    Have seen the term .220 Long Rifle used only by BSA- wondering that was THEIR way of saying 22 LR?

    Buy it, and get a chamber cast made. You will either end up with a fun rifle, or a good base for something else (a win-win situation)

    To many possibilities, from the ones mentioned above, to British "Rook" types to various wildcats from around the world for me to hazzard a guess.

    I recently added to my cartridge collection a 22 Short and Long CENTERFIRE that are visually the same as there rimfire counterparts (until you look at the base anyway).
    In addition to the 22 XL rimfire mentioned by NN, there is also the 22Mag and 6mm Longue Portee (which dispite it's name uses a .230 bullet) rimfires.
    The 220 Wilson Arrow is a modified 220 Swift (what I think PS is thinking of)

    Agree with 11b6r, I think it is just .22 long rifle with a British accent.

    Is it a large or small Martini action?

    I have owned several of the martine's marked .220, they are standard .22 long rifle (still have one or 2[;)])great guns!

    After doing some more checking you are right. I was able to talk the owner of the auction house to let me try and load a .22 long rifle outside (we are outside the city limits). It chambered and ejected fine and then he remembered that the owner had said that it was a .22 long rifle. I hope I can pick that up tonight as he said there has been no interest in the weapon. It is in very good condition although it is missing the rear sight ( a peep maybe?). He has about 25 firearms to be sold to the highest bidder as to settle an estate. Also has a double barrel Hopkins and Allen and a 1903 A3 that are pretty nice....we'll see...Thanks guys...Bull
