Yes you can get shells at any of the big sporting goods suppliers Like Cabela's Midway USA etc look for 44/40 as well as 44 WCF they are one in the same. Value on your rifle would be only a WAG unless you have good close-up pictures taken in good lighting conditions. we need pictures of sights wood finish and condition of Bluing. any refinishing will hurt the value and any non original parts will really hurt. 0 -
Actually, you never said if it's a rifle or carbine, barrel length, markings, full or half magazine, percentage of original finish, etc., etc., etc... 0 -
Judging by the serial number, you have a first year production rifle. Post quality pictures of all features on the rifle so condition can be determined. You may have a very valuable rifle. 0 -
As Perry Shooter stated, cartridges are available at many locations. "44 W.C.F." is the original name for what most people now call "44-40".
As for the value, that question can only be answered after we know considerably more about it. Please start by answering the following questions;
1. Barrel length?
2. Barrel contour (e.g. octagon, round, of 1/2 octagon 1/2 round)?
3. Magazine tube length relative to the barrel (e.g. full, 1/2, or 2/3)?
4. Straight grip butt stock or pistol grip?
5. Plain wood stocks or deluxe grain?
6. Checkered stocks?
7. Butt plate type (e.g. crescent, shotgun, Swiss, etc.)?
8. Standard open sights, or special order (e.g. a tang sight)?
9. Condition of the bore?
Posting several clear, well illuminated, pictures will help answer some of the questions.0
