Ruger 77/44 value?

A local gun shop has a new Ruger 77/44 and it is calling my name. The price tag is $475. The gun has a wood stock and is blued and is new. Is the price fair?

I know the limitations of the cartridge.I know the advantages of a lever gun or semi over a bolt gun in the same caliber, but I want it anyway. It needs to be taken deer hunting.

It would help if I could convince my wife that it was a good deal rather than merely another one of my whims.

    I think that's a very good price for a new 77/44. Show her the Suggested Retail Price if you can find it in the Ruger Catalog. Better be fast, though, that gun won't last long.

    Grab it now; it won't last. I'm seeing them used for that price. . .when you can find one. I have one and have found it to be quite accurate (two inches or so at 100 yards) and it really likes 300 grain HTPs which work well on hogs.

    Edit: Meant to add that these make good suppressed guns when the standard barrel is replaced with an integrated suppressor barrel. Might be one of the reasons the 77/44 is not easy to find used. Loading the heavy bullets to under the speed of sound with a suppressed barrel makes for a pretty quiet but hard hitting rifle.

    All you have to do is visit the Ruger forum or check the GB auctions to find that's a great price for an older 77/44 - Ruger is making them again, but they're synthetic stocked. I have an older one, bought it about 2 years ago for about that price and am happy as heck with it.

    I shoot 240 jacketed bullets, generally get 2" groups or so at 75 yds.

    Great price, neat little gun.
