Wanting to ID my Winchester

Just got this from my grandfather (a retired gun dealer), and am trying to ID it. I'll let the pics show.

    Looks like Burris rings and mount. on either a model 70 or on a Mauser 98 type action . Most all Rifles will have something stamped on the Barrel but replacement barrels may be just left polished and blued . If you remove the scope and bases the receiver should have some names or marks. I think it is a custom built rifle and you need to find out what caliber before attempting to fire the gun . The Stock does not look factory Winchester to me. For the most part unless it can be documented that a custom rifle was built by a NOTED builder they are not worth as much as a factory original rifle.

    Yeah, I forgot to mention it has 7mm rem mag stamped in the upper left side, and winchester stamped above trademark.

    Welcome to the boards. If that s/n is right looks like action is a '36 issue Model 70. The barrel is not stock, nor is the caliber. The bolt is jeweled and the safety does not appear to be correct for the year. All in all you have a custom built rifle. By who is the question? Appears to be nice work, but probably between $500-750 range depending on who would want it. If it is family then you can't put a price on it...keep it and enjoy it and learn the history...

    From the limited detail visible of the action in your pictures, it appears the donor gun for your custom was a Model 54 Winchester.

    Go to the auction side, search 'Winchester Model 54', & compare yours to the pictures on the listings there.

    Verry nice looking gun, ENJOY!

    "'Winchester Model 54'".......if it is a m-54 it has had m-70 bottom metal added (do-able), otherwise it is a rebuilt (very early) m-70. It looks like very nice workmanship.

    Thanks guys! Many, many years ago I took a dive crossing a creek and banged up a rifle he had lent me for that deer season. However, if my memory serves me right, that was a Rem 600 35 cal. If it's this one, then I guess I thought wrong all these years, lol. But anything's possible. Anyway, thanks for the info, and though I may not post often, I like what I see here, and may hang around from time to time.
