45-70 gov.?

I have found what I believe to be a 45-70 gov. bullet.
But it is all steal, no copper jacket. It was rusted up
pretty good. After cleaning, it measured out at 10mm.
I can't find any referance to any either.
I have been digging in an extinct military shooting range.
I have also found some .50 ( in good shape too.)bullets.
Any clues?

  THIS 'SOUNDS LIKE' A .50 CAL BULLET WITH OUT THE JACKET. NOT NESSASARALY A.P., .50 BALL USES A STEEL CORE (A.P. USES TUNGSTON).

  I just measured one out at 11.4 just above the case? 10mm seems a bit small?
