788 rifles.. and 600/660's
I am of the understanding, that remington made the 788, and only made about 700 of this rifle, in 223, cal, and that they made many , many more in the 600/660 rifles. Is this true, or is it the other way around, or is neither

Remington made the 788 in 223 Remington, yes, but the number is far greater than 700 pieces. I am not sure how many 600's were made in 223, but they were the rarest, if memory serves me correctly, and the Blue book says that there were only 227 model 660's in 223 Remington.

Let me add something about those 788 rems, before the boating accident,
I had about 4 of them. They are the best shooting guns that came out of a remington box. Fast lock time, great barrels, What a bolt action should be. Don't let any "gun snobs" tell you how cheap they were. A whole lot of them were converted into serious target guns. Values just keep going up on them. JMHO Bob0 -
A local gun store just got in a few 788s from a fellow whose had them since he bought them from Big 5 about 35 years ago - still in the box with a $129.00 price tag on them. There's a 7-08 carbine, 223 rifle and a 243 carbine. I bought the 7-08 carbine for $325.00 and was told that was produced in lower numbers. The 223 and 243 were produced in fairly large numbers so far as the 788 is concerned and the shop's selling them for $300.00 which I think is a great deal considering they come with the original box.
IIRC, the 44 Magnum version is the tougest one to find.
I think they are a great value, made very well at a good price. Kind of interesting to look back at an economy rifle when economy still meant all wood and blued steel. And having a receiver with a fairly small ejection port - as opposed to the typical very open type of the Win 70 and Rem 700 - gave it some very good stiffness and rigidity, good qualities for a target rifle.0
