1897 trench gun
Does a trench gun made in 1947 have a collector value as one say made prior to 1944? Does anyone know the last year that a WB cartouche (or however you spell it) was put on one? I have one that according to the serial number was make in 47 but it has a WB cartouche. It looks all orignal. Any ideas? Thanks. Sam.

I have a Winchester 1897 12 ga. that someone cut down to 18.75 inches. If I by the repo heat shield form numrich will this work or is the barrel to short? 0 -

WB was Waldemar Broberg, US Inspector for the Hartford Ordnance District who held the post up to July, 1942 and who's stamp turns up on Winchester M1 Garand stocks (though none in my own collection [V]). WB put his stamp on M97 trench and riot guns in serial numbers
915,000-927,000. The final delivery of Winchester M97 shotguns to Uncle Sam was in 1944, there was no post war procurement .0 -

If you used any of the currently published (or internet websites) to come up with the 1947 DOM, then you have the incorrect date.
As Mark pointed out, WB (Waldemar Broberg) was the inspector up to mid 1942 (one source states May, another states July). Regardless, if your Trench Gun is authentic, it should have a serial number that is less than 927000 (the highest know "WB" marked Trench gun is 926809).
I have a copy of the Polishing Room Serialization Record Books for the Model 1897/97 that lists the specific year that each serial number was made. If you will post the serial number on your gun, I can confirm when it was made.0 -

Where did the 1947 production date come from? The final deliveries of M97 shotguns during WWII ended at serial #956222, which is well above the serial number you sited, and means that your M97 was produced in WWII and not after the war. 0 -
I just googled Winchester Model 1897 shotgun serial numbers and got it off there. I beleive it was Antique firearms network. Sam. 0 -
