Browning A5 help

Hi. My previous topic was locked so I started this new topic. I am the guy who asked for help understanding why my A5 would not eject spent shells. To all who replied I wanted to say a huge thanks because your assessment of the friction ring setting was right on the money. The gun works just fine whenfiring 1 1/4 ounce high brass, and the adjustment is very easy to make indeed.

    How does it function with low brass loads?

    Hey Dan, (neighbor) did you call Browning for an A5 manual (they're free)so you'll have the ring setting chart to fire different loads at your fingertips? Where do you shoot?

    I bought mine in 1960. It will not function with mixed high and low brass shells. Either one or the other. For heavy loads, take the forend off the gun and look where the friction piece is located, it should be on the front next to the barrel ring. The friction piece is grooved brass with a blued steel ring over it. this has a longitudinal slit. The Friction ring (brass) is directly behind the friction piece. This compresses the friction piece during recoil, slowing the barrel. Lastly is the spring. Now for low base rounds place the brass friction ring next to the receiver. This way, the friction ring does not squeeze the friction piece, speeding the recoiling barrel. If you need more 'splaining, I can send you a copy of pages 27 & 28 of THE AMERICAN RIFLEMAN, June, 1955!!!!! Do not shoot high base on the low base setting, they will eject, but not good for the gun. Enjoy your treasure, mine has never been in the shop. Eddie

    Hi, where do you live? I don't do much shooting besides at game animals, but when I want to fire off a gun I go to the Pudding Street Multiple Use Area in Putnam Co.
    Actually, my father saved the manual for the Browning 16 gauge he bought in 1961 even though he sold the gun long ago, so I have that manual to refer to. The change to the friction ring position couldn't be easier. The gun works fine and is in 98% condition. I am thrilled to be in the Browning club!
