Shipping a Rifle to a FFL

OK, I did a search and found a couple of posts. I'm still not clear and I'm sure to old to do any jail time!

I want to send a rifle to a FFL in TX for repair. Do I understand correctly that I can do this via USPS as long as I have no markings on the box that says anything about firearms?

    Yes- no markings on exterior, you MUST declare to the Post Office that it is a fiream, they MAY require you to show it is not loaded.

    PRINT what follows, take with you just in case- C&P from USPS Domestic Mail Manual:

    432 Mailability
    432.1 General
    The following conditions apply:

    Pistols, revolvers, and other firearms capable of being concealed on the person (referred to as "handguns") are nonmailable in the domestic mail, except as permitted in Exhibit 432.1 and DMM 601.11.1.
    The disassembled parts of a handgun or other type of nonmailable firearm that can be readily reassembled as a weapon are nonmailable, except as permitted in Exhibit 432.1 and DMM 601.11.1 or 601.11.2.
    Unloaded antique firearms sent as curios or museum pieces are generally permitted, as specified in Exhibit 432.1 and DMM 601.11.2.
    Unloaded rifles and shotguns may be mailed if the mailer fully complies with the Gun Control Act of 1968 (Public Law 90-618) and
    18 U.S.C. 921. The mailer may be required to establish, by opening the parcel or by written certification, that the gun is unloaded and not excluded from mailing because of the restrictions in 432.1b and c.

    While a nonlicensee must declare to a COMMON CARRIER (i.e., UPS or Fedex) that the contents of a shipment is a firearm, USPS is not a common carrier so there is no requirement that you notify the postal clerk that you are shipping a rifle or shotgun.

    Some clerks will be confused & confounded if you notify them, & that may result in an unpleasant conversation with several supervisory levels before they accept that you are legally able to ship a long gun.

    There is a postal form that must be filled out stating that you are shipping a firearm and you are conforming to all regulations. I have to fill it out every time I go to ship a firearm at USPS and im an FFL..

    That only applies to FFL dealers shipping handguns. Private citizens shipping long guns do not need to fill out any forms.

    MFI- that is a form 1508, usable ONLY by Dealers and Manufacturers when mailing HANDGUNS. It is not required for rifles or shotguns.
