Mauser C96 Schnellfauer
Good evening, everyone.
I recently came into possession of the above-referenced automatic pistol. My father-in-law kept it in a sock in his closet. When he passed away, my mother-in-law gave it to her son who found out that it was contraband (never registered) and that he could go to jail by possessing it. I have a C&R, so he gave it to me. I contacted ATF, ended up confirming that it was never registered, so I had to donate it to a museum. I haven't been able to find out its value b/c there have been no automatic "broomhandles" on Gunbroker.
Anyone know how much those things are worth? It was in excellent condition.

Legal for ownership....about $12,000-$15,000-or higher (assuming condition you describe is as appears in my mind).
Altered Schnellenfeuer to semi-auto only (altered in the factory at Mauserwerke prior to export) if the condition is as you describe $1,500-$2,500
Any C-96 Semi-auto in mint condition (greater than 95% overall original finish/matching) $2,000-$3,500.
Spanish/Chinese knockoffs, post war "reworks" and Bolshevik contract guns about 40-60% of authentic C-96. Best, Joe0 -
It appears that it's value is immaterial other then for tax purposes. Since your in the position of being forced to donate to a museum, it's value on the resale market is moot. The IRS is part of the Treasury Dept., just like the BATF. I wouldn't try to push you luck with them, and try to value it the same as one that's papered and being legally sold by a class 3 dealer. Their not that freeken dumb. 0 -
I'm not trying to write anything off on taxes - it belonged to my mother-in-law, anyway. I just thought that if a semi-automatic broomhandle was worth anywhere from $1000-$3000, what would an automatic be worth to someone 1) if it were registered and available for sale, and 2) provided they had a Class 3 license.
