Flash hider for Mosin M44 carbine, which one?
The discussion turned interesting at the end of that last thread, so I'm reopening this.
The new question is, what sort of flash hider/muzzle brake should I put on the end of my M44 carbine? The goal is just to mitigate flash, and if I can reduce recoil a bit without massively increasing the noise, I wouldn't mind that either. I'll probably have the end of the barrel threaded for this. . .I'm definitely NOT going to use one of those flimsy set-screw jobs.
I'd like to hear different opinions, or about any experiences people have had with these on .308 rifles in general.
Given the popularity of military style rifles in 7.62x51 Nato, and 7.62x39, there seem to be a gazillion different flash suppressors and muzzle brakes out there in 7.62 to choose from.

For what its worth, the 7.62x54R generates 30-'06 like ballistics, so I'd imagine its running at 30-'06 (or .308) like pressures.
I think the hugantic muzzle flash from the milsurp loads isn't due to increased operating pressures, but just due to the slow-burning powders used in those loads, plus of course, the short barrel.

I have 2 m91's that I received for free but I'm partial to the shorter model 44 also. I plan on picking up a model 44 and have also considered as to putting a muzzle brake/flash hider on as well. I have not measured the barrel diameter but if you could tap this down to 1/2x 28 or 5/8x 24 there is a world of flash hider/muzzle brakes out there. I also have a brother who is a machinist that can make about any thing I can come up with. I'm kinda partial to the Smith Vortex flash hiders and have them on my .223, 6.8 Remington and my assortment of AR10's. I think if you stuck with bullets in the 150 grain range with a faster burning powder it would reduce your flash problem by at least half. I have used a whistle pigged AR pistol and the difference between it and a regular A2 supressor is huge, You can see a small, and i do mean small ball of visable gases and just about all of the muzzle blast is directed forward, so that you can actually stand beside the person shooting wothout the blast makeing you blink. Of course there is backwash into the barrel, but that wont matter with the m44..
It also seemed to tame down recoil some0
