Mossberg 500 feed problem.....

Hello for the ever sunny south [8D],

Thanks ahead of time for any help you might offer!! I have been inside my share of 870s and 500s and still run into a glitch that doesn't present itself for easy diagnosis. Here's what I mean. On a very little used 500 there is a feed problem...every round or another will drop out of the bottom/feed area of the gun while pumping in the next round. I can easily see the bar that holds the round up next for firing. It seems to cover plenty of the shell rim to hold it in place, as does the opposite side. I disassembled the receiver and examined the parts and DO NOT see any evident wear/damage. The guy doesn't know how to clean a gun but there's not enough crap in it to distort movement......

I compared the action side-by-side with another 500 and didn't notice any difference or problem.

Any thoughts?

    Well it could just be that the shell isn't being pushed far enough up into the tube. Is this what the guy told you or did you get it to perform this problem.

    On the inside the right hand side of the receiver is the ctg stop that holds the next shell in the tube. Is it worn enough or not fitted properly to let the next shell spring out. I've found this to be the case a number of times. Have seen shotguns that one brand will work ok and another will fall out.

    Thanks 41 Nut I have the same Problem on a Mavrick 88 but due to having a 500 that works fine I havent had it looked at.

    It is an easy fix. You can bend the cartridge stop ever so slightly. You may have to do it several times by trial and error until the problem stops. I have run into this many times on older Mossbergs.
