1911 lug fitting

How do you decide which lug to use ? Last year, when I knew next to nothing about the 1911, I bought a spare barrel for my Govt model. I noticed it didn't have a lug, so not knowing what to do, I bought one that was , either plus one or minus one. I didn't feel anything binding. When I shot the pistol,, I thought it shot better.

So, how do you fit a lug? I've read that better fits means better accuracy, but I don't want to take a chance on damaging anything....

    I think you are talking about the link, not lugs. The lugs are part of the barrel that fit into the slide. IF you use the wrong link, you will get a loose fit, or too tight a fit. A +1 link probably tightened up the fit of the barrel to the slide.
    If you want to learn about building 1911's I suggest you get Jreey Kuhnhausen's books, The Colt 45 Automatic A Shop Manual and Volume II.

    EDIT: Contact some gun clubs in your area and see what kind of competitions they shoot. I look at your profile and there are some good clubs close to you. If you don't mind traveling, come down to Marietta and shoot with us at Fort Harmar [;)]

    Hello to build a 1911 for match shooting we do a number of things to "TIGHTEN UP" a factory built First we tighten up the frame to slide fit "this is NOT for the untrainded person without the proper knowledge" . Then we either weld up the hood and bottom lugs or install a new barrel with over size hood "Rear Part that rides up the breach face of slide" and bottom lugs. . We mill or file this hood to fit the slide for .001 inch left to right movement as well as front to back play with the top locking lugs in the slide and barrel when the slide is closed. Then we grind or file the bottom lugs "PART of the barrel" so there is no up & down movement of the barrel with the slide closed then we fit the barrel bushing to both the slide and barrel. This is the short story on how to build a match grade pistol .A lot more to it. Old school used different length link pins but this is IMHO a poor way to do the job. The Fireing pin hit is then off center the bottom support should be the link pin against both bottom lugs not against the narrow link. The link is only there to UNLOCK by pulling down on the barrel not intended to hold the barrel up to lock it in place it will wear very quickly.

    Edit The very best place to start is at the site of the National Championships Camp Perry Because each year "you just missed it 2 weeks ago " before the nation matches they have a 2 day Small Arms Firing School for a very cheap price and many of the best shooters and coaches in the world They even furnish the pistols.[:0][^][:D] Canton Ohio also has matches as well as many other Clubs in OHIO go to the NRA web site Shooting Sports U.S.A and get an online copy that gives you all locations of matches . Or come to central Va. I coach one on one for free. Seriously you need a GOOD older shooter to take you under their wing to avoid the many pitfalls. I have the names and addresses of every pistol shooter that ever shot at Camp Perry the years I attended 1972-2005 I might be able to give you some names of shooters near you.

    Oh great ! another book I have to buy ! I'll put it on my List.I just got the US Military Match and Marsmanship Automatic Pistols book by Bill Jenkins that Perryshooter recomended. I have an "American Beauty" on the way. I want a Clawson Guide, but the seller won't come down 10 bucks.lol

    Perry Shooter. So you saying I shouldn't put my NM in a vise and tighten it up ? just kiddin ! ! I knew a couple of the things that you mentioned, but not the majority. and thats just a small part you say. I guess that's why a Bullseye gunsmith earns his money.. thanks for the help. again...

    to hijack my own thread,Here in Ohio, how would you get started to
    shoot in contests? A contest is a good way to improve my skills. If I have any. Most of my life I've been shooting cans and stuff, It was only last year that I decided I need a bullseye to shoot at [:)]

    and last year All I did was work and sleep ! pfffttt.. I have time now..
