Help, Stevens 25-20
I bought this Stevens 25-20, cause I always wanted a 25-20. I also bougght some 25-20WCF ammo. They don't fit. What kind of 25-20 do I have? I didn't realize there was more than one type 25-20 ammunition.

Hello your rifle is 25-20 single shot not 25-20 WCF the 2 are completely different cartridges . you can get special order cases to reload and also custom loaded ammo but you will not find them at local gun shop or Wal-Mart. look up 25-20 single shot.
Your rifle is either a model 44 or 44&1/2 The picture is not large enough of the action /receiver for me to tell the difference . sort of like a Winchester low wall and high wall the 44&1/2 is stronger. Yours looks to be in good shape and original.0 -

Buffalo Arms sells .25-20 Single Shot ammo, but it is custom loaded and very expensive:

This is currently loaded smokeless ammunition for 25-20 Single Shot chambered rifles. We use properly head stamped brass (item# 2520SSBERT) and our .257" 85 grain cast bullet (item# 258085) 20-1 alloy SPG lube.
I would either set up to handload for it or pass it on to a collector.
You could not rechamber to .25 WCF, the Single Shot chamber is longer even though smaller at the head. The barrel would have to be set back and rethreaded at considerable cost and loss of collector value.0 -

Dies and brass are avilable from several sources. It is a neat old target/small game round. I have one in the 44 1/2 action. Yours is the 44 action. More than adequate for the .25-20 SS. You have a nice example there. Have fun with it. 0 -
One reason that the 25-20SS brass is so scarce is that it was used to make a popular wildcat cartridge, I think in the 30s? (can't for the life of remember the caliber). The case itself is unique in that you can't make it from any other brass, however I believe Bertram Brass is making it now. Still pricey though. 0 -
Hello Mazo that was the 22-3000 and Griffin and Howell even had brass made with their head-stamp. 0
