old colt .357
what year did colt start making the python? I have a pistol with a 6 inch barrel and NO markings...I think it is a early model colt python but not sure. can anyone help... it is a great gun and i do not know the value. I have not seen another one like it...I will love to hear all comments thanks Glenn

About 1957, +/- without looking it up.
But if Colt has ever made a gun with "no markings" I would be surprised to see it. By the way, nobody can tell you anything of substance without pictures.0 -
If your revolver dates to the 50's, there would only be two double action Colts in .357. The Python and the .357. The Python has a vent rib on the barrel.
Both the revolvers have the standard Colt markings used during that time frame. If you have one without any markings, something is definitely wrong. Either it's been refinished, or it's not a Colt.0 -

A refinished gun can sometimes have the markings covered over, though even then you can usually see SOMETHING if you look closely.
Obviously, there are other ways for working guns to have no markings. . .most of them not good ways.

Don't forget the Old Model (not to be confused with the newer Trooper Mk III) Trooper - made 1953 to 1969 I believe. Same action as the Trooper, round barrel with a ramped front sight. I have one sitting at home, I don't think there are any model designations on it but not 100% sure.
I didn't want to burn up a response on chronology, I believe the "Colt 357" came 1st, then the Colt (OM) Trooper then the Python - I'm certain the Colt Trooper predates the Python, just not 100% on the 357 model being before or after the OM Trooper.0 -

Yeh. It [1958 vintage reference] will say either "Colt Trooper", or "Trooper" on the barrel. Rampant colt on the sideflat. Colt medallions.
Sidenote: the original Trooper (non MK series) is the direct descendent of the Python. The later MK series troopers had design changes to please the bean-counters at Colt, and showed significant design departures from the Python. Not the original Trooper, however. Best, Joe0 -
Colt did make the .357. Its only marked Colt .357, same action as the Python but without the vent rib barrel.

A few weeks ago I was at a Greg Martin auction and saw 2 unmarked Pythons both in .22 caliber. They were from the Colt factory along with some other unusual Colt pieces.0
