.50 Sharps W/no seriel #

Im looking for info on Sharps rifle Pat date april 6 1869 with no seriel number. Where is the best place to find more info on this rifle?

    Without the serial number, you are unfortunately at a dead-end. Very little (if any) research can be accomplished without the serial number.

    Take off the forearm and look under the barrel. If it's still the original barrel it will have the sn on it. Other parts were often sn'd as well, such as the buttplate, stock, etc. A description of the rifle would also help.

    Octagon barrel stamped OLD RELIABLE SHARPS RILE CO BRIDGEPORT CONN CAL50. RECIEVER STAMPED SHARPS RIFLE CO PAT DATE APRIL 6 1869 on side.Under reciever small stamp 190 or 19d and unknown makers mark on underside if reciever. No other markings or seriel #s anywhere.My research shows sharps made the 50 cal from 1869 to 1871 and this reciever shows pitting and wear that might fit these dates of manufacture.Ive been told it wasnt uncommon for sharps to not use seriel numbers. The wood was replaced at some point and is in very nice condition with original patchbox and butt plate. The barrel is in very good cond also and my not be original. Who knows?

    This is not true. While there MAY be a very small number of Sharps that got shipped w/o sn's, it most certainly was not common. With the replaced wood and possible barrel you likely have a Bubba job, and the sn got obliterated in the process. Either that or wear/pitting has made it unreadable.

    FWIW, Sharps offered .50 caliber arms well after 1871, and the April 6, 1869 patent date was not applied until [approximately] August, 1875.

    It's slang for a non-factory alteration. Using meaning a 20th/21st century alteration, but there were some 19th century Bubbas too [:)]
