Model 64-5 hand tension spring

I received a model 64-5 with the trigger out of the revolver. The tension spring is not held in place with a pin and I cannot get the spring back into the trigger without damaging the spring. Does anyone know how you would do this. The hand, trigger and spring are all seperate.

    Is this one of the MIM models - has a single, separate coiled spring instead of the one attached as in the old style? If so, one end of that spring is actually stuck into the trigger itself, from the top of the trigger edge, just behind the little pad that lifts the DA sear.

    Only took me about 4 hrs to figure that out one day, 1st time I took apart a MIM Smith.

    The spring is similiar to the pinned type, however is loose by itself. The only way I can get it on bends the spring, damaging it. I have tried everything I know and don't understand this one...

    The newer model Smiths - those with internal parts made by the MIM process and not the older machined types - use a different method of attaching the hand spring to the trigger.

    There should be a long straight length to the spring and a shorter straight length, with one coil in between. The longer end should be "dipped" into the trigger itself from the top edge & behind - think of the length of the spring as an oil dip stick, the rear edge of the trigger is the receptacle.

    Hold the trigger edgewise away from you - just above where the trigger (where your finger would rest)curves into the rest of the trigger (the part that would be inside the frame when in place) there is a small slot for the spring to be "dipped" into.

    Once you get that in place you just lift up the other end and put in the kand, the stem of the hand will be engaged by the spring.

    It is annoying as heck the 1st time - after I stopped searing and crying and got it in place I realized it's pretty amazing the way they did it.
