1873 winchester

I picked up a 1873 32 20 here a while back that is a good solid brown and the only bad pitting I have is from about the end of the front sight pretty much all around the barrel to the end of the barrel. A couple of them are pretty deep and I was wonder if there is a product that could be used that would would take a brown/blue, and not look like a fill in. Or just forget it and say it's over a 100 years old.

    Hello Kevin,

    Are you 100% sure that the butt plate is nickel-plated[?] I have seen people confuse bright (cleaned & polished) steel with nickel finish on more than one occassion.

    Can you post a few pictures of it?

    In answer to your question, Yes, some of them did come with a nickel-plated butt plate, but other parts of the guns should also have nickel-plating on them (e.g. the receiver frame, forend stock nose-cap, mortise (dust) cover, etc.). It would be extremely rare to find just the butt plate nickel-plated.

    Now, with all of that said, it is easy enough to find out if it was factory nickel-plated... contact the Cody Firearms Musuem (use the link found just after ny signature line), and purchase a factory letter for your old Winchester Model 1873. The factory letter will provide you with all of the details concerning when the rifle was manufactured, and the original configuration.

    This is a winchester nickle butt. I know it looks yellow, but its really silver when not in artificial light.

    Thanks for the info. Also found on the butt plate lower toe inside is stamped 989 also on right side of lower tang is also stamped 989. What do these numbers mean? Thanks in advance Kevin

    Hello Kevin,

    You are quite welcome.

    The "989" you found stamped in those locations is an assembly number. Assembly numbers are normally found on special order Winchesters only, and the numbers were used to ensure that the correct parts were reassembled together following the final finshing process.

    tools it is a 44-40 as which i do believe all 1st models were. i might be mistaken but some one will correct me if i am. thanks kevin
