Maverick 88 advice
Hey ya'll,
I'm new to the forum and was wondering if anyone has any advice as to the best after market 'combat' stock for the Maverick 88. I've been checking out all the different stock types and wanted some input on the pros and cons. I picked up a used one on the cheap and was going to do some mods on it. I intend to use it as a home defense shotgun/camp gun. Thanks in advance....

Speedfeed and the ATI pistol-grip/folder are both great options for a combat stock. If you go with a pistol-grip, consider a front pump grip as well, it helps tame the recoil if you don't have the gun shouldered ... I looked at the ATI this weekend and it looks well constructed but I have no experience with it.0 -
Well, I was looking at the collapsible stock (M16 type) stock, but I haven't read any reviews on it. As far as the top folding stock goes, I heard good comments on the ATI model. I still need to order the shorter barrel for it as well. Heck I picked it up for under 100 bucks so I don't mind investing some extra money in it to get it looking like I want it to. From what I understand, I can order the barrel from Cabelas unless any of you know of another supplier. Thanks again... 0 -
I have a six position colapsable stock on my 88 with a side saddle for extra rounds. My 500 has the cruiser barell with pistol grip stock and pump with a side saddle. 0 -
As mentioned, you should be looking at the Mossberg 500 stocks, of which there are a million out there.
Personally, I happen to think the "plain" fixed stock it comes with is one of the best, if not very "sexy". They're durable, comfortable, easy to point, and cheap (ie free with every gun [;)]).
A lot of the aftermarket folding stocks are kind of wiggly, or not that comfortable to shoot.
I can't make a specific recommendation, but I would say that IMO, pretty much the main reason to get a folding stock is to reduce overall length for increased portability and storage.
So for that reason, I'd try to avoid a linear telescoping stock (like an M16/M4-type stock), since those don't save you that much overall length. Instead, try to get one that folds up.
Personally, I'm partial to side-folding stocks. This picture shows one example, but please don't take it as an endorsement of this particular model since I've never personally tried it and can't comment on its quality.

Edit: For Iwannausername, a speedfeed stock (which holds extra shells inside the stock) is a great addition, and I agree, I'd probably prefer that to many of the gimmicky folding ones.
But if you just want to keep a few extra shells handy, and keep the expenses to a bare minimum, you can keep the original stock and just loop on a buttstock shell holder like this one for only $5-10:

+100, although I've replaced mine with an original speedfeed stock. Same dimensions, etc. I just like having the extra ammo there wtih the gun (A marine flare, a load of birdshot, and 2 slugs fwiw)

Thanks for all the advice guys. I ordered my 18.5 in barrel today and it should be in in the next couple of weeks. I'm starting to lean towards the folding stock just because of what I've heard both on this forum and from others about the 'wiggle factor'. Thanks again ya'll..[:D]

Well, I opted for the side folding stock from ATI. Should be in by the end of the week. We'll see how that works out. After reading some product reviews it seems to be a nice simple design.0
