dumb Question

I had a guy tell me some SKS models will take a AK mag. Is this true?

    It is fact that damaged barrel at the muzzle or a damaged or bad crown can affect accuracy and shot placement. Has anyone ever tried to alter the muzzle or crown to inprove or move shot placement in the desired direction as needed ?
    ( old double barreled shot gun into smooth bore double rifle.)

    well dumb questions are lots easyer to handle than dumb mistakes....that said 'no', the object is to make the 'crown as consentric and square to the bore as possible. thant and "( old double barreled shot gun into smooth bore double rifle.)" there is no sutch thing as a this, it would still be a shotgun. now there have been doulbe rifles built that had an ajustment devise built into the barrel assy. to 'regulate' the barrels.

    Sure. Some savages have come with really bad crowns, and folks have reworked them. Instructions/photos/etc on rimfirecentral.com

    Yes, but "tried" is the operative word.
    I saw an old magazine article with pictures of frontier era double barrelled shotguns filed at the muzzle in an attempt to get "punkin balls" to regulate like a double express rifle. Modern trials showed it did not do much good.

    Common to true up buggered or un-square crown to improve accuracy but NOT to move group direction on way or the other. Anything other than a clean and true crown will give shotgun patterns to one degree or another, depending on how "off" the crown is.

    Its not a dumb question.

    First of all, there is nothing you can do to a shotgun that will turn it into a rifle (well, sort of putting in a rifled barrel). Can't happen, and if there were an easy way to do it, nobody would be using rifles!

    There have been shotgun chokes with segments of rifling put into to try and accomplish this, but they just don't work all that well.

    Choking off the barrel might help a **LITTLE**, but see above.

    The answer is that if you want to regulate where a smoothbore gun (eg a shotgun) is going to pattern, the way its done is by tweaking the entire barrel.

    In a rifle with a damaged crown, as you know, you can have it re-crowned to try and restore lost accuracy. If significant amounts of rifling are damaged at the end of the bore (eg from poor cleaning technique, for example), the barrel can be cut back and re-crowned.

    Alternatively, there is the "poor mans" recrown, which is to counterbore the barrel. That entails drilling out a small section of rifling at the end of the bore.
