Pre Mark I Ruger .22 pistol?

I just picked up a Ruger .22 pistol that I've concluded could possibly be a 'pre Mark I' pistol. It doesn't have the magazine release and the action doesn't lock to the rear. The mag is released by moving a little retainer that holds it in place on the bottom of the grip. Did these overlap in production with the mark .22 pistols or were they just the prelude? It seemed similar enough to be in that family of pistols, but I didn't want to make any assumptions about the line. It seems like I read somewhere that the red logo was changed to black after Mr.Sturm died. Although, I also didn't think that that feature would be specific to this model. Any info would be appreciated![:)]

    Just found an auction with one that seems like it, only mine has a shorter barrel(maybe 4"?, I haven't measured yet)

    It would be best if you could post photos of your pistol, and at least a partial serial number.

    I believe the early Standard Model Rugers, ( with non-adjustable fixed sights ), were first manufactured in 1949. The Mark 1 was the target version of the Standard Model, it had a heavy barrel and adjustable rear sight. It came along a couple of years later.

    pre Mark II would be a better title as the Standard and the Mark I shared the same frame, rufe-snow's reply is on the money. you just picked up a great little gun. was out with mine today plinking the steel plates at the club. from your description you have a Ruger Standard pistol with a 4 3/4 barrel. you can use the mark II magazines in it also. they load easier and hold 1 more round. enjoy! [:)]

    Karsten, I have 2 of the Ruger Standard Pistols, a 4 3/4" and this 6", does yours look like this? I have changed the magazine release on this one.

    The Standard Model pistols were made from 1949 to 1982. They dropped the red Ruger emblem on the grips and went to black in 1951 when Sturm died of hepatitis.

    Yep it looks just like that, except that it has the 4 3/4" barrel. It has the black emblem so it's probably a later production date for the model. It's pristine though, looks to be unfired.

    Laredo Lefty, is your mag release a custom rig or were you just able to order an aftermarket part?

    That mag release is an after market larger version. It works easier and faster than the factory release.

    There is big business in after market parts for Ruger handguns and the famous 10-22 rifle since they are so popular
