38 S&W need help
I need to know value and year. Also type and style.
I have my grandads gun 38 special S&W CTG on 3 inch barrel 5 screw 2 duil pins on ejection star walnut handle diamond pattern molded in front and rear sights numbers on bottom of butt are s64837 also in frame after opening the cyl. aftermarket trigger widener and after market 2 finger metal grip exspander made by Melvin Tylers T-grip okla city 14. condition is blueing has rubbed off in some areas from holster but no scratches or dents. Shoots 3 inch groupings at 25 yards and I cant shoot that great so WOW thats a good gun. Ran 100 rounds through it on july 25th perfect day.

Welcome to the forums. That gun is an "N" frame Smith made in the last half of 1946. I assume by "molded in front and rear sights" you mean fixed sights.
From your description it sounds like you have a pre-model 20, a .38/44 Outdoorsman Transition. This model was made with 4" 5" or 6 1/2" barrels. Yours has either been cut down to 3" or your measuring it wrong. Revolver barrels are measured from the muzzle to the point where the barrel meets up with the front of the cylinder. The 4" barrels on this model are rare, so if thats what you have it increases the value.
If you could post a picture it would help to grade it for value. As you said the "trigger shoe" and the "grip adaptor" are add-ons.0 -
This is my gun and you are good it is a 4 inch barrel. Sights are fixed. ??? how do you add pictures I tried by clicking insert image but it just typed insert image and added nothing tried copy paste and nothing would love to show you. what do you think price could be?[img][/img] 0 -

Thus far, with the limited info, and sans photos, please take a look at the link below. If the gun matches yours in general contour, you have a 38/44 "Heavy Duty".
Giveaway: the ejector rod is enclosed under the barrel, called an ejector shroud. Does your 38 have an exposed rod, or the rod "inside" the bottom of the barrel like in the photos in the link below? If so, you have the .38/44 Heavy Duty, and follow others, or check the auctions to establish ballpark value. Here's the link. Good luck! Joe
