Remington 870 Express Magnum 12ga

I have this shotgun that I purchased about a year ago from a pawn shop. I liked it then, it continues to grow on me and I'm not really a shotgun person.

I went to the Remington website and tried to identify exactly what model it would be called.

Here's a description:

Remington 870 Express Magnum written on the side of the receiver
12ga, 20" barrel 2 3/4 or 3" with choke tubes and adjustable sights
Wood checkered stock
Has a rifled tube installed
Sling swivels on cap and butt stock
Drilled and tapped for scope mounts on top of receiver
Finish is black matte or dull black.
Action is smooth. Real smooth.

Came with a 2 round extension tube, but I swapped it and spring over to a different shotgun and put it back to original.

Also, what kind of slugs or sabots could this rifled choke fire and at what distance? (please elaborate on slugs and sabots I'm not very familiar with them and what kind of spread to expect at distances). What is real the difference between a rifled choke tube and rifled barrel at the target? (I have other smooth chokes for it also.)

Any help would be appreciated. It does not match exactly any shotgun I see on the Remington site.

Edit - Laredo, by "spread" I was thinking of what kind of accuracy and practical distance for multiple shot groups.

    You can fire any slugs that you can fire from any other barrel and at the same distances.

    It sounds like the previous owner set it up the way they wanted, rifle sights, sling attachments, 20" barrel, probably for tactical shooting rather than hunting.

    Robert, Slugs have a solid lead projectile that contacts the inside of the barrel when fired. Sabot slugs are encased in a plastic sabot or jacket that contacts the barrel then falls away after firing. There is no "spread" when shooting slugs, its a single projectile.

    Rifled chokes are only rifled for the length of the choke, just a few inches. Rifled shotgun barrels are rifled for the length of the barrel except, of course, for the chamber. The difference between the two at the target is little. The rifled barrel may be more accurate as it grips and imparts spin to the slug longer than a rifled choke so it has more time to stabilize the slug.

    I never really understood why remington put in a rifled choke tube. I would replace the tube with the IC (imporved cylinder) tube and just shoot foster slugs also called rifled slugs. If you want accuraccy then I would sell off the choke barrel and puchase a fully rifled barrel then you can shoot sabots and only sabots. They are much more accurate and adds about 100 yards to the ability. The barrel swap is purely my opinion. Glad to help you out. Welcome aboard.
