Smith and Wesson model 53

I just inherated a VERY early, 4 screw model 53 in the original box. the gun is in 90-95% condition. Unfortunately, the 22lr cylinder is missing. This was the only firearm I inherated from my grandfather, and have my first son due on sep. 24, so I would like to box this one up as a complete set and put it away for the next 20 years. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I may find one? Any help would be great.

    Smith & Wesson would likely be the only source, and since they have not made the model 53 since 1974 its doubtful they would have any cylinders. The extra .22LR cylinders were an option and not made with all model 53's.

    I suppose you could look at gun shows and IF you found a 53 cylinder it would have to be fitted to the gun by a gunsmith.

    Look real close at the cutout for the spare cylinder. Is there reasonable evidence that a cylinder once resided there? If yes, then get the cylinder, because the gun will letter as being supplied with the extra cylinder.
    If you have the six .22LR stainless steel inserts, you're good to go as is, most likely. Don't worry about the extra .22LR cylinder, because it's not going to letter. Not many were ordered. Best, Joe.

    If you are lucky enough to find a .357 magnum cylinder reamed to .22LR (which is what the M-53 used) then best to have S&W fit it. It will allow S&W to serialize the extractor to the gun, and, with the work order, will be worth considerably more. As I have said, finding the cylinder will be the hurdle to overcome. Best, Joe

    I would be surprised if you are able to locate a cylinder for your model 53. I don't think other K frame .22LR will interchange. The model has a longer cylinder. I have seen the inserts on occasion, but that is rare also. I did know of a fellow with a set of inserts that lives in DeLand Florida but I don't know if he still has them. I will forward his contact information if you let me know.

    The .22 jet is the noise and flash king of revolvers. And, pretty pricey to feed. Pick up ammo when you can if possible.
