Accuracy of XDM 9MM

Can a good gunsmith improve the accuracy of a new Springfield XDM 9mm? Mine shoots a 4" group at 8 yards.

    With all due respect, 4" groups from a new service pistol at 8 yards are probably a shooter issue, not a gun issue. (And if it really were a gun issue in a new pistol, personally I'd be sending the gun back to the factory or gunstore, not to a gunsmith).

    Have you ever actually shot a 2-3" 25 yard group with ANY pistol?

    Gun magazines talk about this all the time, like its trivial, but the reality is that MOST shooters CANNOT shoot that well on demand, even with a match-quality gun from a rest.

    If you don't know for absolutely sure that you can do this (ie because you've done it many times), what you need is more practice in marksmanship, not gunsmithing.

    So before you do anything else, I'd suggest getting some decent ammo, and having a truly good shooter test your gun for accuracy at 25 yards (not 8 yards).

    By the way, a 4" group at 8 yards is probably all you would ever really need in the "real world" of defensive shooting.

    At 8 yards with a decent service pistol and quality ammunition, a good shooter should be able to punch one ragged hole 1-2 inches in diameter onto a 1 inch square target. A small target helps concentrate the sights and shots into one place. A larger target makes it easy to aim inconsistently.

    Yep, what Beantown said.
    Out of the box the XDM is very accurate. No improvement needed.
    Off a rest mine will shoot 2-3" at 25yds and I think it is capable of even better groups with tighter sights.
