H&R bolt action 30-06

I recently saw a H&R bolt action chambered in 30-06 at a gun shop. Does anyone have any info as to when it was manufactured, is it worth fooling with? It is in great shape, with a few dings in the stock, but it has an almost spotless finish on the metal. Any info will be most helpful!

    Some H&R rifles were commercial Mauser actions. I have a 301 model with a Mannlicher stock in 243.

    Do you know how to tell if it is a Mauser?

    The H&Rs made 40 years ago were made on FN Mauser actions.
    Some were called Mauser Supreme (?)

    The 301s had FN Commercial Mauser actions and Douglas bbls. My daughter has a 270 FS and loves it, she uses it hog hunting. I have a "like new" one in 25-06 I got a few years ago. These are quality rifles and IMO are better finished than factory stuff you find today. My Blue Book has them listed in the 450 range. The action is probably worth that. I gave a bit more for mine and still think I got a deal.

    Mine is a model 300 Ultra. California roll-over stock that is way, way over the top, and fits me perfectly. I converted mine from .243 to .260 and use it for deer and javelina. I agree it is a quality rifle.

    H&R Bolt Action Center fire rifles were comprised of the following actions:
    1965 - 1972 Mauser type actions from FN Belgium
    1973 - 1977 Sako actions from Finland
    1978 - 1983 Mauser type Mark X from Zastava Yugoslavia

    Models 317 and 317P 1968 -1974 all Sako actions
    Barrels, apparently were all Douglas made. Actions and barrels were mated to H&R produced stocks in the H&R factory.

    Thanks for the info guys, unfortunately when I went to buy the rifle, it had already sold. Any idea where I may find another??

    The older model 340 rifles had an oil finished stock which fit poorly but was functional. I had one on the shelf sometime in the early 80's and no one wanted it because of the stock. I finally sold it through SGN (way before internet auctions) and now wish I had it back. Best suggestion is look for a Remington 798 if you like the Mauser style action.
