What's with all the buyers using _***_ names

It seems to me that recently there are a ton of bidders with the same pattern of f***3 or 1***0 etc. I haven't seen any sellers with the same pattern. All are new or relatively new bidders. Any thoughts on if these people are just in here bidding up the prices or what?

Just seems weird.

    The auction site obfuscates the identity of sellers/bidders to prevent any direct contact between folks who do not have immediate business with each other.

    It also prevents name calling of those with whom you have had previous problems.

    Doesn't make any difference, only person who needs to know their real name is whose auction they win. Depending on the stuff you were selling. If it is a firearm as long as it's transfered through a FFL 01,or 03, and the name, address etc. on the license is legit all that matters . If nonfirearm their means of payment is valid and legit and you get your hands on their money. They can use any phony name they want to, who cares.


    "Shill" bidding has always been a problem, doesn't mater what name they use though. Most of the "shill" bids are so phoney, they stand out like a sore thumb.

    I don't recall my user name showing differently when I've bid before. Must not have paid attention.

    I don't believe that your user name wil look any different to you or the seller, but it wil be unavaliable to the rest of us that are bidding on an item.

    This is a function of GUNBROKER AUCTION side. If you bid you see your name but every body else will see a name assigned to you by Gunbroker. but many auction sites are doing it . Bid on an Item and then get someone you know to look at that item. and see what name they assigned you.

    My username appears to all (except the buyer/seller) as g****e. Prevents e-mails asking to conduct a back-channel deal and phoney buyer scams. Many buyers who have their Auction name the same as their E-mail name have been approached with scams to pay the wrong person desguised as the real seller.

    There should be no legitimate reason to want to know a 3rd party identity. I know you are just being curious, but that's insufficient reason to know their usernames.

    GB is following E-Bay's lead on this, for the very same reason. Best, Joe

    It will not show differently to you...just other people...just like theirs does to you.

    Just a nice looking touch that GB uses. The first time I placed a bid it should my screen name, and then when I checked later it had the first letter and the last. I thought I'd been outbid. Live and learn!!
