Please help me with my inherited gun
Hi. I wanted to ask the "experts" (because I know NOTHING about guns), about my inherited family gun, as well as a general question. First of all, do I have to register my antique, inherited gun? Secondly, anything anyone can tell me about my gun (especially its value) would be greatly appreciated. Here's what it says on the gun itself:
Smith & Wesson 38 Special CTG. On the bottom of the handle is the number 587228. On the top of the barrel, it says, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Mass USA Patented Feb 6 06 Sept 14 09 Dec 9 14. Of course if has the Smith and Wesson trademark also on the side of it. Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

From the serial number range it could be a "Military & Police" model made during the 30's. Similar to this one. 
M & P's are one of the most common of the S & W revolvers. Over a million were made from the early 1900's. Value would depend on factory originality and cosmetic condition. Best to post quality photos for appraisal advice from our folks. Legal status of the revolver would depend on your State and City of residence.0 -
Hello if you push the release button on the left side this should let the cylinder swing open then you may see a model number like 10 or 19-3 etc this could help us date the pistol Depends on what State /City you live in but most places you don't have to register .your pistol but it is most likely NOT an ANTIQUE. to be an ANTIQUE it would have to be made before 1898 and the 38 Special was not made until much later then this as well as the Pat dates are much later. 1914 0 -

Welcome to the forum! First, NO you do not need to register your inherited firearm(s).
Pics would be helpful to determine the condition of it. It's obviously a Smith & Wesson revolver that shoots .38 Special cartridges. The 587228 is the serial number. Record that somewhere. If the gun is ever lost or stolen you can report that and possibly have the gun picked up if someone tries to sell it. The patent is old but not necessarily the pistol. Someone will come along and possibly give you a date of manufacture. And possibly a relative value.
In the meantime, I suggest since you have no experience with guns that you might find an NRA or other association teacher and learn how to fire one. Of course that is completely within your Constitutional right as an American. If no one is available then you might look amongst your friends to show you how to use it. That is, of course, depending on whether or not this firearm is safe to use.
