Are there any gunsmith secerets on how to strip, clean, refinish, etc. pressed checkering??? THX HAWKSHAW

    If you soak pressed checkering in water you may lose half of it. We all know about raising dents by wetting to cause the dent to swell out again.

    Clean with a brush with short stiff bristles you can buy or make. Cut the bristles short to about 1/8" of a stiff bristle brush, like the little metal handle 'acid brush' (hardware store) or maybe an old toothrush. Don't sand checkering.

    If you are removing the finish from the stock, use paint/varnish remover (not water base) with the brush.

    Be aware that pressed checkering is a 'cheapie' stock that may also include walnut stain on the stock. Solvents may remove it and give a differnt color stock than you started with.

    Leather dye (Fiebings) is a good wood stain but you may have to mix different colors to get what you want. After you put it on, you can tone it down with alcohol dampened rag. Finish with varnish of your choice.

    Hope this helps - it can get expensive for a one-time job.
