    Hard to believe that a parked GI Colt, would be bringing that kind of money, specially nowadays with everything in the freeken toilet? I could see if it was one of the early low production guns from the 30's maybe.

    Its a Navy pistol, that is the reason for the premium price. I would like to see more pictures.

    It would also be nice to have a colt letter verifying that it is a Navy pistol.

    It makes sense that a Navy issued 1911 side arm would be more rare than the standard Army issue, although I suspect that the two were identical other than some markings. Am I correct on this?

    Yes, although I am looking up serial numbers right now. And this pistol maybe a little low in the serial to be a Navy pistol.

    Can anyone read the second number of the serial? Is it a 7 or 9?

    I am going to go with 7, making it a 20,000 below a Navy pistol. Even if it is a 9, that maybe close to the cut off point.

    According to my reference there were just under 4000 1911A1's shipped to the Navy in 1942. In the serial number range 793658 to 797639. I can't make out the serial number of the Colt on the auction.

    If it is one of the Navy Colts, you would think that this would be noted in the auction, and/or an effort made to make the serial number visible to verify it's rarity. As it stands now if someone was to buy it under the impression it was one of the Navy's, they might wind up with just a plain vanilla G.I. Colt.

    I would never pay that much for a WWII vintage 1911, I just don't like the parkerized finish. give me a navy colt made before 1918 and in that condition and I will get out the check book[;)]

    770013 or 770813. Could be a 913 also. Not sure.. Just a guess.

    Have it down to 770913 or 770013 I guess the 0/9 could be a 8 but very unlikely.

    I'm with you, the serial number is 77xxxx...I don't see it marked as US NAVY either? the serial number does not match up to US navy designated pistols from 1942. nearly 4000 were produced for the navy in 1942 but the lowest serial number is 793658...
    this serial number denotes a pistol sent to the army in april/may 1942
    picture 3 clearly shows m1911A1 U.S. ARMY

    I agree, its not a Navy. For so reason I had a different serial number thought in my head. I don't think the 1911A pistols were marked Navy.

    Unless he amends his listing to include an inspection provision, it's a no-go.

    Reason for amendment to listing: If a dispute is filed against the seller, the buyer has considerable more clout than with E-mails, and especially phone "he said-she said" scenarios.
