Winchester 1885 ....Value and Question
Hello Bert and all, I have the opportunity to get my hands on another 1885 Schuetzen made in 1898. Its a 32-40, and I do not have photos. I do not trust the blue book estimates and I have not seen one for sale before. the Wood is in 90% condition with a swiss syle helm plate. It has double set triggers and a #3 30 bbl. the bluing is 85% and the case coloring on the frame is probably around 70%. Its missing the palm rest. Bore is great and show little sign of wear or pitting. has vernier mid range sight and globe front. No modifications have been done. Gun letters as schuetzen. A ball park estimate of what kind of offer I should make would be appreciated.
Also, is there any estimate on how many 1885 Schuetzen rifles winchester made?

Hello Todd,
Please forward the serial number to me. A Schuetzen Rifle made in 1898 could be a First Model, which would make it quite rare... can you post (or send me) pictures of the rifle?
Depending upon whether or not it is a First Model, that will determine the value range.
I am still researching the production numbers for the Schuetzen rifles (as well as the Special Sporting, and Special Single Shot rifles). I suspect that it will take me a few more years of research to nail down the numbers. Thus far, I have surveyed (115) Schuetzen rifles.

Hey Bert, I am talking with this gentleman from Cleveland Oh. and am getting this information second hand. However he said the serial no. is 835XX and he wont give me the last 2 numbers. I am very skeptical about this and will talk to him again tomorrow to see when I can come and look at it. He has described this gun the best he can on the phone and is going to try and get me in touch with a family member of the guns owner. I am at his mercy that the gun letters until I get to see it and call in the number. I wish I could tell you more but I dont know anything just yet. As for the partial serial number, it most likely is a real early 2nd Model, but it still could be a very late 1st Model. The highest serial numbered 1st Model I have surveyed is 81524, and the lowest serial numbered 2nd Model is 80801.
