Cost is related to quality and knock-down power is determined by caliber. There might 75 calibers that would knock down a pig. What's your budget? Look around on the auction side of GB.

There are lots of these on the auction side in the $600-$700 and you can get an excellent scope in the same price range or even less.

What kind of range?

I'm a big fan of pistol caliber carbines. A Ruger 44 carbine is light, and has plenty of whump.

Or, just about any deer rifle with the proper bullet ...

That price range really opens you up. Since I'm so good at spending other peoples money, I'll say get a DSA FAL

Other end of the spectrum would be a Savage bolt gun with accutrigger, spend the extra $$ on glass and ammo.

Thanks for the info. my budjet would be around $1500.00. Just looking for the best bang for the buck.

Any old 30-06 will knock down a pig if you put the right ammo in it. So will a .308 or .270. Some people prefer more speed. They go with a 7mm Mag or .300 WM then. Any of the new WSM's have plenty of speed and power. If you wanted to be a bit different than the rest of the magnum crowd go with the .325 WSM. It has the most knockdown of all of them and isn't any more expensive ammo wise than the rest. Of course you would save a ton of money if you reloaded. That's getting onto the more 'knockdown power' side. For that any big cartridge such as the .45-70 the 444 Marlin, I have a 9.3x62 that had that very thought in mind. Go into thick brush and knock a big pig down. CZ make a very affordable 9.3x62. If you have a Cabelas near you I've seen both Ruger and CZ Safari grade rifles (Safari class cartridges too) for about a grand.

A friend of mine down in Texas says they swear by the .257 Roberts for both javelina and feral pigs. Like I said most any good high power rifle .25 caliber and up will work. Whatever you want to get hold of new or used just has to have a .308 based case or bigger. (that includes Savage 300 cases too.)

Buddy of mine has whacked quite a few with a turkish mauser he paid a princely $75 for. You can start there and go up to tens of thousands of dollars.

I've never hunted hogs but for new guns Savage would be my choice too, great price and can't beat the out of box accuracy until you get to rather high end pieces. Tikka a close second. For milsurps, a mosin 38 would make a handy brush gun, or a 91/59.

When I lived in Florida, I bought my Marlin 1894 44mag. for hunting pigs. It does the job.

I have show wild boar with .45-70, .35 Whelen, and 7.62X54R Russian. Those cartridges worked great. $1500 for a pig hunting rifle. That is way too expensive. Go to Walmart and buy a new Savage with a Simmons 3-9X40 scope for $357.00. You can get a .308, .30-06, .270, etc. You don't need any more power than either of these cartridges. Just about anything will kill a pig if you hit it in the right place. I've seen a few go down with 22-250 hits behind the ear. . or a 22 LR beween the eyes. I like 44 Mag with 300 grain XTPs or a 358 Win works well too. My latest though, and easily lowest cost, is a Rem 742 in '06 with 180 grain bullets and a ten round mag. Whatever you have in your hands will get the job done.

I know said you want a rifle. You might consider a good rifled barrel 12 ga. A 1 1/2 oz slug has a lot of knockdown power and good in brush. Mention it because a lot of folks don't consider all possibilities.

Someone mentioned the older ruger 44 mag semiauto rifle. Sounds like a good choice for hogs to me. Powerful enough yet light enough to carry all day without bruising recoil.

Its your wallet, but IMO, $1500 is insane money for a pig gun.

You want maximum bang for the buck?

Get a $150 Mosin-Nagant M44 carbine.

Its cheap, its handy, ammo is readily available (and not too expensive) and the 7.62x54R (".30 Russian") cartridge it fires is roughly as powerful as a 30'06. The Russians literally use it to hunt Polar bears. . .its more than enough for any pig so long as you do your part.

You won't care if you beat it up in the brush, and best of all, if the pig charges, you've got a built in bayonet to stick it with!

Edit, and if for some reason you can't do the job with five rounds, you can reload fast with stripper clips:

Serious negatives? The short bolt handle and cock-on open actions worth together against you, making for somewhat slow reloading time (But that's why you have the bayonet! [;)]). Of course it is possible to fire one pretty quickly with a bit of practice.

Muzzle flash is pretty impressive, though this really shouldn't be an issue during the daytime.

Lastly, mounting a scope in the standard position above the receiver requires you to have the bolt bent down, and drill and tap the receiver for an extended scope mount. Doable, but it will run you a bit more money.

On the other hand, the iron sights are decent (and included). If you want to run a forward mounted (eg "scout") scope, then putting one in is trivial, and you could put on a reflex or dot sight for speed if you like.
