S&W PRE MODEL 10

I was looking at the above last weekend, in 38 special and covered in that green-brown patina old weapons attain after a long while.

Said to be a police issue weapon from a smaller town south of here, one of 3 the guy was issued over his career.

Doesn't look like it was carried, sorry I can't give serial nos. except that they matched, and I would think circa 1920 or so, original grips and good bore. The action seemed sound and tight.

The guy wanted $250, and I passed for several reasons.

Perhaps one was ignorance.

    i have a s&w wesson [i believe pre mod 10]38 special. it is a stainless revolver with a 4" barrel. it has 3screws on the side plate and 1 on front of the trigger gaurd and 1 on the front bottom of the grip frame. the serial # is c306463.it has fixed sights the front one a half moon shape. the stainless is starting to peel just a little on the top strap over the cylinder.iwas trying to figure the age. the best i can tell it was made somwhere between 1951 & 1955.i was wanting to know appr. worth of the gun. i still havn't figured out how to put pics on forum. i was also wondering why the topic of my winchester model 10 was locked. i appreciate any and all help & info.

    It's kind of strange, the S & W book lists SN's between C1 & C223998 as being made in 1948? It's kind of hard to believe that S & W cranked out almost 1/4 million "C' prefix revolvers that year, in addition to the "S" prefix and "K" prefix guns?

    Hold on Rufe..... Those numbers, C1 to C223998, were made over 4 years, 1948-51.

    Mooned. Based on those numbers, your gun must have been made in 1951.
