Winchester 54 question

I have this old winchester model 54 that has had the rear bridge tapped for a scope mount. There is just one hole. The question is, can I have this hole welded and refinished so not to tell its been there? there is matting on top so it would need re cut also. Anyone ever heard of this?

    You say "so not to tell its been there".

    Anything is possible while usually not practicle. The work you are asking about will require a high degree of skill/talent such as you will find from Doug Turnbull. You could call him for a quote but first off let me tell you it's NOT going to be cost effective.

    If it were my gun, I would put a period correct scope on it & go enjoy the gun for what it is.

    If you are opposed to scopes, a bridge reciever sight (Lyman for one) will cover the area.

    A filler screw for the D&T hole will be immensely less $$$, and much easier to do.

    Money is not the object here. Is it something that can be done by an artist/gunsmith? will the entire reciever need reblued?

    It can be done. But if you are attempting to return the rifle to "as original" the work you will be doing already deletes that and is therefore not cost effective. Meaning your rifle may have a much higher value if in original condition. Original condition was changed when it was tapped. By returning it to original and re-cutting then re-blueing you do more damage to the collectible attributes of the rifle than leaving it as is and having it marked down for the scope base hole(s).

    Yes the action will need to be re-blued because of the heat caused by the welding. it shouldn't need to be re-heat treated because it's not the part of the receiver that is most critically sensitive to that. Although, some gunsmiths may insist on the entire receiver being re-heat treated.

    As others have said, it can be done. It will not be cheap. It will not return your rifle to original condition, but will likely further detract from the collector value than the single hole already has. Put in a filler screw and take it hunting!
