Springfield Armory 45 G.I. Micro mil-spec problem
I would like to have any help directed to this particular model if possible. Having had all the problems usually complained about. Failure to feed, extract completely etc. Purchased 2 factory mags with the offer from springfield also. All testing is done with 3 mags all 230 fmj various brands from blazer aluminum, brass,remington umc speer lawman 1 box of wolf metal casing.Afer approximately 400 rounds extractor breaks called springfield and had a new one sent out Looked stronger than original. Now also trying a wilson mag Same problems but to a lesser extent. Watching grip hold cleaning etc.Have tried everything except short of sending it back.Now with the price of ammo getting to expensive to play around with should I just send it back or is there something I can check.Any help or advice is appreciated. Hello CASH broken extractors are usually caused by rough/dirty chambers or steel /aluminum cases The pistol slide is unlocking before the pressure is low enough to allow the case to be pulled free of the chamber. The other thing to consider is IMHO the inherent design limits of the 1911 type pistol in how SHORT you can go with a barrel and still have a gun function. a short barrel has to tip at a greater angle between lockup and unlocked because the pivot point is the barrel bushing or front of the barrel. This causes problems in fully chambering a round . On top of that recoil impulse is generated only for the time from the primer going off until bullet exits the muzzle this time decreases as the barrel gets shorter. this gives a smaller window of function. Given different shooters hold pistols tighter or weaker when shooting.The Pistol builder tries to compensate by putting in a weaker recoil spring . Weaker spring lets gun unlock before the pressure is low and the cycle of short barrel pistols function problems start all over again 0 -

To answer two questions I tried holding my arm fully extended off a bench with a tight grip just to try and make sure of my hold and no to the question of having anyone else fire the gun. Having always heard how touchy a 3" model can be I felt it may be the design plus maybe this perticular model. Had a colt officers model years ago dont remember anything like this with problems also having purchased a rock island armory 45 but not having shot it yet.you can see how much chamfer there is on the barrel at the feed ramp. the springfield has none. 0 -
See if you can get a stronger recoil spring and see if it works better. You might have take it to a 1911 smith who understands short barrel ones.The Colt Defender and the Kimber I have now feed fine. 0 -
Shortened barrel versions of longer, drop breech autos like Browning system in the 1911 have increased functioning problems because the feed ramp angle is steepened when the slide is fully rearward. This means the slide needs to push the cartridge up at a steeper angle than on the 5 1/2" barrel full size 1911.
It requires greater spring force to feed and the cartridge rim enters the extractor and the chamber at a steeper angle.
The feed ramp needs to be polished bright as chrome plating as does the chamber. A standard extractor needs to be relieved at the bottom
so the angled case doesn't jam at this point while stripping from the magazine.
The chamber will probably have to be throated, that is opened up just short of the start of the case web with all sharp edges rounded and polished bright. A tight target chamber wont work because the cartridge is being fed at a steeper angle into the chamber.
A stronger recoil spring will probably be needed.
You may find that after a few rounds, the polished feed ramp gets smoked up and failure to feed results.0 -
Do the Springfields have to be broken/shot in? So far, your's did the broke part [:0] I'd go with the suggestion of other shooters running your 1911 to eliminate you from the situation. Would also only run brass 230 fmj. Run your mags with 2 -4 rounds at a time. Hope it shoots in soon. 0 -
Again thanks to any and all responses. When first experiencing trouble I called springfield and they told me 300 rounds break-in is recommended I'm fine with that. My best guess now is there is over 600 through it also with cycling the action by hand. As mentioned problems are less severe but noticing failure to close on the last round. The wilson Mag I purchased does not have the nipple on the follower like factory mags.seems to be discussion there on if it's needed.There is quite alot of difference trying to push the last round out between the two mags Sometimes it will run a full mag through either one, but you can't consider it reliable. I only have 5 in the mag at any one time. This is a two piece recoil spring guide. Brownels list a spring for the champion/compact model 22lb or a 24lb spring 22 is factory May try it for 8$ but it must be a single spring replacement I understand your comments on having someone else shoot it but if its not good in my hand it not good to me,I'm to poor to hire a bobyguard [:D] 0 -

But that way, you can determine if its shooter related or a malfunctioning weapon.0
