M1 Carbine stock touch up

I finally received my M1 carbine from CMP. It looks to be in great mechanical shape, shoots well also. Its all Underwood, I'm no authority, but it looks like it has had little use. 4 mill serial #, metal and bore are in much better shape than I expected. Muzzle is very tight.

The stock has been cleaned up. It is dark from oil? Wood is something other than walnut. It has loose "hairy" stand up wood fibers. Is there something I can rub on to make it more smooth, maybe linseed or tung oil? I'm sure it is pretty well saturated already but I would like a nicer to touch finish.

Your recommendations will be appreciated. thanx, dm

  If its not walnut, then its probably birch. If there a no visible cartouches on the stock, you can sand it to smooth it down then apply boiled linseed oil.
  
  I have walnut stocks on all my carbines. I have sanded some of them that needed it then applied a combo walnut stain and oil. They turned out very good.

  My preference is to remove all metal, then remove old finish, oil, & grease with furniture stripper (rubbing with 0000 steel wool). After dry, apply tung oil with a cloth, rubbing with 0000 steel wool between coats (3 or 4).
