Engraved Colt Single Action Army

A friend of mine is auctioning off this beautiful Colt SAA on Saturday. It's a .45 caliber shipped in 1897 to Roberts, Hardwick & Taylor of Sherman, Texas. It's in 99% condition with a factory letter certifying nickel finish, 4 3/4" barrel, pearl grips and factory engraving.

He sold it a few months ago for $30,000 but the buyer gave him a bum check! I think it's worth more than that. What do you guys think?

    Absolutely gorgeous. Have you done a "hands on"? Are the grips period to the piece?

    I have a nickel 1906 SAA with the same barrel length. I've always refered to it as 4 3/4in. The letter says 4 5/8in?? Interesting.

    The grips are factory and contained in the letter. Thanks for pointing out my error - the barrel is 4 3/4".

    I love it, I would have to sell my entire collection to buy that one gun....let me think it over....it sure would take up alot less room in my safe/closet/spare bathroom.....[:D]

    Hello Spider Great pistol . I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but the (45 colt) on the barrel does not look as crisp as I would expect with the 99% finish . I would love to examine it with a lope but from what I can see it looks like it may have been re-nickeled.

    When it was re-auctioned on 7/18/09, it only brought $17K. [:(]

    His were Ivory handled. He (Patton) said, "Only a pimp would have pearl handles."

    I loved that gun but I couldn't afford it. It sold too cheap.

    Too cheap? Well it got the market value that day in that place. Could have changed the day before or the day after, but that is how it goes with auctions. It would not have been worth that to me. I looked into having one engraved, and decided that cost more than the engraving was worth to me, so I bought a pair of really pretty (not pearl!) grips.
