Is surplus 7.62x54R drying up?

Prices have been going up, but that's true of ALL ammo.

At this point, after decades of cheap surplus, pretty much all of the surplus .303 ammo is gone, and most (but not all) of the surplus 8mm is also gone.

You figure the .30 Russian has to be next, though it does seem that there is still quite a bit of it around (even if it is now mostly over $0.20 per round).

    I think you'll find most big shooters of the 7.62x54r have stocked up when it was a little cheaper and even during more recent times and I am unaware of anymore new "surplus" hitting the market so I'd buy what you want/need now if you haven't already. Of course the last I looked Widners had some cheap non corrosive hunting loads

    Yup. I remember 30 Carbine, 30-06 and 45ACP in unlimited quantities for $ 7.50/100 for years. 8mm Mauser ammo was never available in bargain qtys since it was held in military stocks till recent times. Jap ammo was never available.
    Russia held onto WW2 stocks of their own ammo and guns and ammo of defeated countries till recent years.
    I wouldn't bet against an end to this old surplus within a couple of years.
    Fortunately, it's still in production so 7.62x54 will probably be available after the military surplus has dried up but not at bargain prices.

    Former Warsaw bloc countries (Yugoslavia, Czcheslovakia, Romania, Hungary) are currently dumping their Milsurp stocks of 7.62x54R MN ammo in a variety of configurations (along with their stocks of MN rifles and carbine) - prices are still the lowest for any high power rifle round - HOWEVER, supplies are becoming more limited and prices are beginning to creep up. At some point the several billion rounds in surplus inventory has to dry up - maybe within the next couple years if the import rate into the US continues apace. Buy it NOW.

    There is a lot more Communist surplus to work with, but it won't last forever. Think how many Swedish, Swiss, and Turkish rifles have been kicked to the back of the gun case as surplus ammunition was shot up. Not to mention earlier waves of Latino rifles in 7mm and 7.65mm.
