Luger S/42, G date? K date?
I have happened to come across this German Luger. It is all matching. and I am stumped on what this K date, G date means. or does this not apply at all to this luger?

Doesn't apply as yours is dated 1938. "G" and "K", would translate into earlier production dates I BELIEVE 1936 & 1937. The krauts didn't want anybody knowing that they were manufacturing new Lugers, so they used "G" & "K" to obscure the actual DOM. 0 -
Does not apply in this case. A "K" date gun would have been made in 1934 and a "G" date in 1935 when the Germans were still trying to conceal how much they were rearming for Round II.
S/42 is the manufacturer's code for Mauser.
1938 is the year of manufacture.
Serial number is 9800 h, the little letter under the digits is part of the serial number because they did not go above four digits and were making a lot more than 9999 guns.0 -
Moot point. You have a [numerically dated] receiver. And it's pre-war. Good quality. Made by Mauser.
Lugers (P-08's) dated with the "G" and "K" symbols are another aspect, used to encode the DOM. Not to worry, unless you considering buying a gun with the letter date code.
Although I can't recall the dates the "G" and the "K" stampings represent, it has no affect on quality, or functionality. Hope I helped. Best, Joe0 -
